Nassau County is a county in New York State. It is located on Long Island. To its east is Suffolk County and to its west is Queens. Traffic Tickets in Nassau County
Most traffic tickets in Nassau County are issued on the highways. There are many busy highways that traverse Nassau County. The east-west highways are the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Northern State Parkway, Southern State Parkway, and the Sunrise Highway. Busy east-west secondary roads include Northern Boulevard (NYS-25A), Jericho Turnpike (NYS-25), Hempstead Turnpike (NYS-24), and Jerusalem Avenue (NYS-105). The north-south highways are Nassau Expressway (NYS-878), Meadowbrook State Parkway, Wantagh State Parkway, Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway (NYS-135), and the Bethpage State Parkway.
The majority of traffic stops are for speeding violations. In other places in New York, highway speed limits are 65 miles per hour. In Nassau County, the speed limit will not exceed 55 miles per hour. Most tickets on these highways are issued by officers of the Nassau County Police Department. Some are issued by New York State Police.
Many traffic tickets are issued on local roads. Here, the issuing agency can be Nassau County Police or the local city/village police department. It is rare for a state trooper to conduct a traffic stop on local streets in Nassau County. Off the highway, there are more of a variety of traffic infractions charged. Traffic Courts in Nassau County, New York
If you received a traffic ticket in Nassau County, your case can be heard in a number of different courts. The exact location of the alleged violation determines which court will adjudicate your charges. In Nassau County there are two cities (Glen Cove & Long Beach), three towns (Hempstead, North Hempstead & Oyster Bay), and 64 villages.
Each city has a city court, and each village has their own justice court. If the alleged violation occurred in a city, the ticket will be made answerable to its city court. If the alleged violation occurred in a village, the charges will be made returnable to the village court. The court is located within the village or right nearby. Some village courts are very small - by volume of cases - and have court only once a month.
For any matters outside of a village or city, the charges will be heard at the Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency (NCTPVA). This court was established in 1991 and was located at 16 Cooper Street West, in the Village of Hempstead. In November of 2022 it moved to 801 Axinn Avenue in Garden City. Most traffic tickets in Nassau County end up in this court. The reason is that most traffic tickets are issued on the highways. For the most part, highways do not go through the jurisdiction of villages.
For more serious charges like driving with a suspended license or Driving Under the Influence you will likely have to go the Nassau District Court. This court is located at 99 Main Street in the Village of Hempstead.
