Nassau County Traffic & Parking Violations Agency
The Nassau County Traffic & Parking Violations Agency (NCTPVA) is an administrative agency that adjudicates traffic violations and parking violations in Nassau County, New York. Nassau County is comprised of two cities (Long Beach & Glen Cove) and three towns (Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay). Within the three towns are sixty-four villages. Almost all villages have their own justice courts. These justice courts handle traffic violations and parking violations alleged to have been committed within the respective villages. However, there are many parts of Nassau County that are not included in any villages. Most highways and parkways are not within any village. Any traffic violation alleged to have occurred in these areas cannot be adjudicated in any village court. The NCTPVA is the court that handles all traffic tickets issued in these areas. The NCTPVA adjudicates more traffic tickets than any of the other village or city courts in Nassau County.
The Nassau County Traffic & Parking Violations Agency is similar, but not the same as a justice court. The NCTPVA is an administrative agency and employs both its judges and the prosecutors. Where such a setting would not be legal in a criminal capacity due to the possibility of conflicts, the legislature carved out an exception for traffic tickets. Whereas a justice court can impose jail sentences for most traffic tickets, the NCTPVA cannot impose jail in any sentence. The NCTPVA is similar to the Suffolk County Traffic & Parking Violations Agency (SCTPVA). In 2022, the NCTPVA moved from the Village of Hempstead (16 Cooper Street, Hempstead, New York 11550) to its current location in Garden City (801 Axinn Avenue, Garden City, New York 11530). The NCTPVA should not be confused with the Garden City Village Court, also located in Garden City.
